Capital Region Training Group goes to International Training Camp

Locations: Oslo area & Sjusjøen Skisenter near Lillihammer, Norway

Dates: August 3 – 18, 2014

Saturday, August 2, 2014 – This August four young high performance cross country ski athletes from the Edmonton region will be heading to Norway to take part in an international training camp hosted by the Norwegian Ski Federation. The camp has been run for several years but this will be the first year a group of Canadian athletes will be attending. The Canadian athletes attending this year include Tate MacDonald, Luke Gerwing, Larking Wasmuth, and Anders Cowper; all from the Edmonton region. Coaches joining them on this athletic adventure include Glen Cowper from St. Albert and Ian Murray from Canmore.

What is the camp about?

This international camp will include Junior National Teams from Germany, Czech Republic, Slovakia, Slovenia, Latvia, Estonia, and Norway; as well as regional athletes from Iceland, parts of Norway; and Canada. Camp attendance is likely to exceed 100 male and female athletes between the ages of 17 and 19; and between 16 and 25 coaches. The focus of the camp will be on running trails, roller skiing, hill running, strength and intensity testing; and, near the end of the camp, there will be a roller ski sprint race and a roller ski distance race. This great experience will begin in the Oslo area for the first few days and then will shift north to the “Sjusoen Skisenter” in the Lillehammer area.

More about the trip for the Canadian athletes

The Canadian contingent attending this camp will fly out of Edmonton on August 3rd, will do some pre-camp training in the Oslo area from August 5 to 8 and then will join the main international camp in the evening of August 8th. When the camp ends on August 15th the Canadian group will head to the Stryn/Loen area of Norway where they will be taking part in a famous European mountain running event called “Skaala Opp” on August 16th. They will then spend one day returning to Oslo in preparation for flying home on August 18th.
