Training Camps

Cross Country Alberta holds several camps throughout the year for young skiers to learn new skills and to interact with other athletes around the province.  The camps are run by experienced Alberta coaches, and are often assisted by high-profile members of the racing community, as well as members of the Alberta Ski Team and Alberta Development Team.

From June 29-July 4, Cross Country Alberta hosted 23 athletes between the ages of 13-16 in the 10th annual Swift Ski Camp. The camp was held in Calgary and was coached by Michael Neary, Les Parsons, Iaroslav Khomiak and Tannis McCubbin. The camp included a nutrition course, ski walking, roller ski workouts, a strength test, a sport psych session, orienteering and hiking. The athletes also took part in the Canmore Canada Day Fun Run, went mini golfing, had a few recovery dips in the Bow River, went to a movie and to the Calgary Stampede.

Haig Glacier Camp - August 24-31, 2009

The CCA Haig Glacier Camp was another great camp for weather and training. For the second year in a row the weather was sunny and warm every day with very good conditions to get in some excellent on-snow training. There was mix of the Alberta Ski Team, Edmonton Nordic Ski Club athletes, Rocky Mountain Racers Ski Team athletes, Foothills Team athletes as well as National Team athletes. Dasha Gaiazova of the National Ski Team and Sarah Daitch an ex-national Team athlete were great role models and training partners for the junior athletes who were able to take part in the camp. Overall there were 22 athletes and 3 coaches at this year’s camp. As always a big thank you goes out to the support staff (Jody and John) for excellent food and grooming, and Kevin and Mike for getting everything organized. A special thank you to ENSC’s Les Parsons for leading the camp and Ian Murray and Christian Flury for helping him out.
